City Info

The city's name found its way into a Groucho Marx joke in the film Animal Crackers. Portraying Captain Spaulding, an African explorer, he explains that they had trouble removing elephants' tusks because they were wedged in so tightly. "Of course," he continues, "in Alabama, the tusks are looser." The city's name is also found in the song "April 29, 1992" by Sublime, who played at the Chukker, a now closed Tuscaloosa bar, in the early 1990s . A song inspired by the city called "Flaggin' the Train to Tuscaloosa", written by Mack David and composed by Raymond Scott, is featured in the soundtrack of Alfred Hitchcock's film The Trouble with Harry. Bill Maher mentioned Tuscaloosa on Real Time with Bill Maher when discussing the presidential election. "Tuscaloosa Women" was the flip side of The Stampeders' only hit, "Sweet City Woman." "My Tuscaloosa Heart" is the title of an episode of the NBC television series, Scrubs; the episode also featured a song of the same name. Tuscaloosa is referenced in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mocking Bird in the first chapter. Tuscaloosa is also referenced in the films "Paper Moon" and "Sweet Home Alabama."
